House Committee Rejects Transparency, Votes to Enshrine Citizens United on Steroids

MICHIGAN — Progress Michigan released the following statement regarding Senate Bill 335 being reported out of the House Elections and Ethics committee, which would codify unlimited corporate spending in Michigan elections.

“Michigan is already one of the worst states in the country when it comes to transparency in government, and Republicans on the House Elections and Ethics committee are sadly joining their Senate counterparts to make it worse by supporting a ploy to inject more corporate money into our elections and policies, giving wealthy donors like the DeVos family more influence in our political system,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “It’s shameful some of our elected officials are bowing to corporate special interests that are out of touch with ordinary Michiganders, instead of working to make our democracy of, for, and by the people. We urge all members of the House to reject this bill on the floor and instead work on the necessary reforms that would make our elections more accessible, modern, and secure. Our democracy is supposed to ensure every voice and vote matters equally – something that Senate Bill 335 does not accomplish.”
