Progress Michigan Calls on Officials to Protect Those Protesting Kid Rock
Social media posts contain threats aimed at peaceful protesters
DETROIT — Progress Michigan is calling on local officials, including Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief James Craig, to denounce the violent threats made against those planning to protest Kid Rock’s opening concerts at the Little Caesars Arena and to provide protection to those exercising their first amendment rights.
“Those opposed to Kid Rock performing at the Little Caesars Arena have a right to peacefully assemble and voice their opinions,” said Denzel McCampbell, deputy communications director for Progress Michigan. “Unfortunately, these gatherings have been met with online threats, hateful language, and shameful displays of bigotry. Mayor Mike Duggan and Detroit Police Chief James Craig should denounce and condemn these actions and words, and ensure that those peacefully gathering are protected.”
“Kid Rock is a controversial person who has said and done things many find offensive,” McCampbell continued. “Including displaying the Confederate flag and making disparaging comments against Colin Kaepernick’s solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement. It would be a shame if local officials in a majority-black city allow those who perpetuate dangerous views to harm residents demanding accountability for an arena they helped to finance.”
