NEW POLL: High Voter Enthusiasm for Michigan Supreme Court Election

94 percent of Michiganders say the races are important to them personally

MICHIGAN — Recent polling released by Progress Michigan in concert with Public Policy Polling shows that there is near universal consensus that voting in this year’s races for Michigan Supreme Court is important. More than seven in 10 Michiganders say this election is very important and more than one in five say it’s at least somewhat important.

Other takeaways from the survey:

  • 88 percent of African American respondents said this election is very important.
  • 84 percent of Democrats said it’s very important, compared to 66 percent of Republicans and 67 percent of Independents.
  • The amount of respondents saying it’s not important at all falls below the margin of error for this poll (3.2 percent).

“Most people know who’s running for governor, but far fewer know their ballot also includes nonpartisan races like justices on the Michigan Supreme Court,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Michiganders recognize that the Michigan Supreme Court has the final say on critical issues determining the future of our state, and they’re ready to head into this election to choose justices who are for the people and not corporate interests.

“This November, Michigan will determine who will sit on two state Supreme Court seats,” Mendoza continued. “The straight-ticket option does not cover the nonpartisan section of the ballot. Everyone must check the nonpartisan section so their voice gets heard on these races that so many of us know are important.”

As you may know, the Michigan Supreme Court is the state’s highest court and has the final say on many important questions involving our state, including constitutional rights, elections, workers, schools, the environment, public safety, and consumer protections. How important is the Michigan Supreme Court election to you personally: very important, somewhat important, or not important at all?
