Progress Michigan Joins Call for Increased Education Funding, Respect for Educators

#RedforEd rally highlights push to properly fund Michigan classrooms

LANSING — Today, Progress Michigan joined teachers, students and advocates for quality public education to rally for increased funding for Michigan’s classrooms. The rally highlighted Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s solutions to fund our schools and fix our roads.

“It’s well past time for our schools to be properly funded and our roads to be fixed,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “For too long, conservatives in Michigan have attempted to force us to choose between an incredible public education for our kids and safe roads and bridges for their busses to drive on. The fact is, we can have both and it’s time to end the budget shell games and truly invest our children’s future.”

Gov. Whitmer’s proposed budget would not only properly fund our schools but would end the constant raid on the School Aid Fund for other uses. This would dig Michigan out of the hole dug by years of not properly funding our schools.

“Tax dollars meant for education should go to education and our School Aid Fund should not be a piggy bank that is smashed open whenever Republicans decide it’s time to give the wealthy a tax break,” Scott continued. “Our teachers deserve the resources to do their jobs, our children deserve classrooms that allow them to learn and thrive and we all deserve a budget that funds our priorities. That’s why Progress Michigan was glad to join the thousands of folks who turned out at the rally today and why we will continue to fight alongside them. ”
