Republicans on Board of State Canvassers Side with Corporate Special Interests Over the People
Shinkle and Pero toss out 22 years of precedent to block popular proposal; play partisan politics with minimum wage ballot measure
LANSING — Progress Michigan blasted the two Republican members of the Board of State Canvassers who ignored decades of settled law and allowed dubious last minute challenges to affect their vote on the minimum wage ballot proposal that was recommended for approval by the Bureau of Elections staff. The statement should be attributed to Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan.
“The Board of State Canvassers should not be a place where dubious legal arguments can be made in an effort to overturn the will of the people who signed petitions and the recommendation of the professional staff at the Bureau of Elections. Sadly, Shinkle and Pero have proven today that just like most other Republicans they will do anything corporate interests want, even at the expense of working people. We stand in solidarity with the One Fair Wage campaign and the hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents who signed the petition and believe voters should decide the issue November.”
