Progress Michigan Calls on Governor Snyder to Withhold Michigan National Guard from Border

Lt. Governor Calley and Attorney General Schuette should do all they can to end family separation

LANSING — Progress Michigan is calling on Governor Rick Snyder to recall any National Guard soldiers and equipment from the border until the Trump administration ends its inhumane family separation policy. Governors from both parties in VirginiaMassachusetts and Maryland have already taken action.

“The Trump administration policy of separating families is cruel, inhumane and unnecessary. The citizens of Michigan should not be forced to support a policy that separates children from their parents for no reason other than locking children in cages to use them as a bargaining chip,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Governor Rick Snyder should recall all existing National Guard troops and equipment used at the border and refuse to send any further support until the Trump administration ends this monstrous policy.”

Progress Michigan is also calling on Lt. Governor Brian Calley and Attorney General Bill Schuette to speak out against ripping children away from parents and putting them in cages. Twenty-one state Attorneys General recently sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen urging them to end the policy. Bill Schuette failed to sign the letter.

“There are times when partisan politics must be set aside and elected officials have to choose which side of a moral line in the sand they will stand,” Scott continued. “Snyder, Calley and Schuette need to tell the people of Michigan if they stand for our American values or they choose to sit idly by and allow children to be abused for political gain.”
