Progress Michigan Statement on Tax Day
MICHIGAN — This Tax Day, Progress Michigan is calling attention to the out-of-touch tax priorities of the Republican-controlled legislature and Congress. From the GOP Tax Plan passed in 2017 all the way back to the massive tax shift orchestrated by Gov. Rick Snyder and Brian Calley, it’s clear Republicans have the wrong priorities when it comes to creating a balanced tax system.
“It’s important that everyone pay their fair share in taxes because they provide the support for services we all rely on. Unfortunately, thanks to Republicans in Lansing and Washington D.C., our tax system is woefully out of balance and working families are hurting because of it,” said Hugh Madden, communications director at Progress Michigan. “What we’ve seen from the Snyder and Trump administrations is an effort to give corporations and big businesses massive windfalls while sticking families with the bill. Corporations and CEOs are not paying their fair share and that’s led to crumbling roads and bridges, underfunded schools, and failed privatization experiments that hurt veterans and public safety. We need to hold our elected officials accountable who prioritize corporate tax cuts over the public good and we need to rewrite the rules so it’s working families who come out on top, not well-connected corporate donors.”
