Progress Michigan Calls on Lowell Mayor Pro Tem to Resign

State Sen. Hildenbrand and State Rep. Albert should immediately repudiate racist remarks

LANSING — Progress Michigan is calling for Lowell Mayor Pro Tem Alan Teelander to resign after racist remarks were brought to light late this afternoon by a Great Lakes Beacon story about the Lowell Showboat, named the Robert E. Lee.

“Elected officials are supposed to serve all of those who reside in their district and Teelander’s racist remarks prove that he cannot fulfill that duty. He should resign immediately,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “State taxpayers should not be paying to rebuild a monument named after a confederate general, nor the salary of any elected official who would send or support such racially charged remarks. Sen. Dave Hildenbrand and Rep. Albert should publicly repudiate these remarks as soon as possible.”
