New Poll: Michiganders Say Big Tech Must Prevent Online Scams and Fraud

MICHIGAN — Recent polling conducted by Progress Michigan in partnership with Public Policy Polling shows that nine in 10 Michiganders support requiring large technology companies to do more to prevent ad scams and online fraud. These findings demonstrate broad support for tech companies to take greater responsibility to protect users from scams on their platforms.

“When scams spread on their platforms, tech companies must be a part of the solution, not bystanders to the problem. Meta made roughly $16 billion in revenue from scam ads in one year — that’s nearly 10 percent of its total revenue,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “The fight against online scams cannot fall on victims alone. Tech companies should be required to do more to protect their users. If they can profit from our clicks, they should be willing to take responsibility for our safety.”
