New Poll: Cost of Health Insurance Driving Affordability Debate
Nearly half of Michiganders say cost of insurance is concerning
MICHIGAN — While healthcare remains a top concern among voters heading into the November 3 general election, what’s motivating people’s financial hardships are now clear with recent polling released by Progress Michigan in concert with Public Policy Polling. Nearly half of Michiganders say the cost of health insurance is the most concerning healthcare-related issue, compared to one in four who say it’s out-of-pocket medical costs. Fewer than one in five say it’s either the loss of insurance coverage or the cost of prescription drugs. The response rate is similar across most demographics.
“Once January 1, 2027 hits, folks who have health insurance are going to be faced with a rude awakening,” said Justin Mendoza, MPH, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Republicans imposed red tape on working families who are trying to get the healthcare they need because of the Big BS Bill, and as a result insurance costs for everyone are going to skyrocket. Many small businesses, which employ the majority of workers in Michigan, are now telling their employees that they won’t be able to afford coverage. Once this avalanche hits, the entire healthcare system will be under threat. Michiganders are taking note and are getting fed up with the mess that Republicans created.
“This is further proof that we need a single-payer universal health care system, where insurance costs don’t constantly increase and leave families struggling. In the short term, lawmakers must act to help Michigan families afford the healthcare they need.”
From the following list of choices, which healthcare related issue is most concerning to you right now: the cost of health insurance, the cost of prescription drugs, loss of insurance coverage, or out-of-pocket medical costs?
