Unhinged U.S. Supreme Court Judges Push the Country Further Away from Equality
Affirmative action decision voids country’s commitment to communities of color
MICHIGAN – On Thursday, the United States Supreme Court ruled to outlaw affirmative action and the consideration of race in college admissions. In response, Denzel McCampbell, managing director of Progress Michigan, released the following statement:
“The majority of the far-right justices on the United States Supreme Court continue to show us how unhinged and out of step they are with the values of the majority of Americans. Affirmative action existed as a way to correct the dark ills and wrongs of this country and lift up communities of color who have been historically denied access, freedom, and opportunity in this country.
“Our society is better when communities from all different backgrounds are included and uplifted. As Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said in her powerful dissent, ‘Our country has never been colorblind.’ It is dangerous, insulting, and downright wrong for the majority of this court to ignore this fact and leave communities of color without the opportunities they deserve.
“It is imperative that higher education institutions find ways to ensure that historically marginalized communities of color have access to the ability to thrive.”
