Playing Political Games with School Aid a New Low for MIGOP
Speaker Wentworth is gambling students’ well-being in a corrupt power play
MICHIGAN – This week, House Speaker Jason Wentworth announced that Republican legislators will withhold $2.1 billion in funding for schools struggling during the COVID pandemic unless the Governor agrees to cede her executive authority to curb the spread of the virus. This move comes after nearly a year of Republican political games that prioritize partisan politics and corporate profits over human life.
“Republican lawmakers have made it clear throughout this pandemic that they’re more interested party politics than the lives and safety of actual human beings,” said Lonnie Scott, Executive Director of Progress Michigan. “Now, they’re holding billions of our federal tax dollars hostage in an attempt to undermine Gov. Whitmer’s ability to do her job all while pretending she’s the one standing in the way of ‘bipartisan’ government. While Gov. Whitmer has done her best to slow the spread and keep people safe, the GOP has refused to work on real solutions and instead wasted dozens of hours entertaining lies and conspiracy theories about our elections. In an effort to get back at Gov. Whitmer for doing the job she was elected to do, Speaker Wentworth is punishing kids and educators who will continue to struggle without the aid they desperately need.”
