Heartbeat Coalition has the Wrong Priorities
State legislators, anti-choice activists parrot dangerous, inaccurate rhetoric
MICHIGAN—Progress Michigan is responding to a press conference held this week by the Michigan Heartbeat Coalition, where state legislators and anti-choice activists defended their efforts to infringe on Michiganders’ reproductive freedom with inaccurate talking points that defy medical science.
“Once again, anti-choice activists are working to mislead the people of Michigan about their intentions to restrict abortion access in our state,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “The majority of Michiganders support the right to a safe, legal abortion and oppose these attempts to interfere with personal decisions made between people and their doctors.”
At the conference, lawmakers including Rep. Steven Johnson, Rep. Lynn Afendoulis, and Rep. Beau LaFave railed against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Democratic legislators for coming out in favor of the Reproductive Health Act, which would update Michigan’s outdated abortion laws and expand access to abortion and all reproductive care.
“Gov. Whitmer has been an advocate for reproductive freedom throughout her entire career,” Scott said. “Despite Republican lawmakers’ complaints, she’s doing exactly what Michigan voters elected her to do. The Reproductive Health Act will help move our state into the 21st Century and empower Michiganders and their doctors to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and access the care they need.”
