Michigan Lawmakers Partner with ALEC to Urge Kavanaugh Nomination

LANSING — A handful of Michigan elected officials have signed onto a letter written by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a corporate bill mill that pushes right-wing legislation through state legislatures, calling for the confirmation of United States Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The letter was first reported by Politico.

State legislators who signed onto the letter include:

  • Sen. Darwin Booher
  • Sen. David Hildenbrand
  • Sen. Rick Jones
  • Sen. Phil Pavlov
  • Rep. Tristan Cole
  • Rep. Peter Lucido
  • Rep. Hank Vaupel
  • Rep. Michael Webber

The letter boldly states: “There is no attribute of Judge Kavanaugh’s character, intellect, or life of public service that should preclude his immediate installment to the Supreme Court of the United States.”

The statement is particularly callous considering the numerous allegations of sexual assault being levied toward Kavanaugh at the moment, with the latest allegation being Kavanaugh was part of group of men in college who used drugs and alcohol to disorient and sexually assault women.

“What we have here are a bunch of out-of-touch men in power who are doing the bidding of the corporate interests who support them. These legislators are saying unequivocally that the voices of sexual assault victims do not matter, that an investigation into these allegations is not needed, and showing their hand that they’re more concerned about cementing corporate power into the fabric of this country,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “What’s even more bizarre is that these legislators are not speaking just as individuals, by signing onto this letter, they are letting a corporate bill mill do the talking for them. It’s sad that these Republicans would rather side with a right-wing front group than allow a thorough investigation into Kavanaugh’s history before placing him in the highest court in the land.”
