New Poll: Majority of Michiganders Support Rx Kids Program
Financial assistance for growing families is popular. Why is Matt Hall blocking support for it?
MICHIGAN – Progress Michigan’s monthly Lake Effect poll tracks public opinion about a variety of issues in Michigan. The most recent Lake Effect poll found that a majority of Michigan voters support the Rx Kids financial assistance program by a 21 point margin, with 79 percent support among African Americans and a near-majority of independents in support.
“Rx Kids acts as an important tool for families across the state at a time when it seems like the cost of everything, from diapers, to gas, to healthcare costs, is increasing,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “But for months, Republican House Speaker Matt Hall and Appropriations Chair Ann Bollin have been spreading disinformation about Rx Kids, a program that makes it easier for expecting and new parents to afford to live. Speaker Hall has gone so far as calling it a ‘scam.’ Well, Matt, the public isn’t buying it. Michiganders support this program and the reality is that Rx Kids is helping take families out of poverty, and the program is finding success everywhere from the Upper Peninsula to Kalamazoo.”
The Rx Kids program is estimated to have supported more than 9,400 families in Michigan, created 433 jobs and produced more than $46.5 million in economic impact since its implementation. Originating in Flint, the program has since expanded to other areas due to its success.
