POLL: Two-Thirds Support MI Senate Dem Budget, Oppose House GOP Education Cuts

Michiganders not only want increased education funding, they want a budget deal ASAP

MICHIGAN – Progress Michigan’s most recent Lake Effect poll found that nearly two-thirds of Michigan voters overall oppose the Michigan House GOP budget and more than two-thirds support the Michigan Senate Democrat budget. Additionally, more than three-quarters of voters think it is important that a budget deal should be reached quickly.

“Michigan has taken incredible steps forward in recent years to secure more resources for our schools and our children, including providing free school meals across the state,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “It’s clear from this poll that a majority of Michiganders support continuing that progress by increasing the resources we give to our schools, our teachers, and our students—which is what Senate Democrats have already proposed with their budget.

“But not only is Republican House Speaker Matt Hall so determined to literally take food out of children’s mouths that he’s continuing to push an unpopular budget that doesn’t even have majority support from Republican voters, he’s also determined to drag out this process for as long as he can. As Michigan’s schools face a rapidly approaching deadline to make their plans for the next fiscal year, Matt Hall bragged about his success at holding up the budget agreement at last week’s Mackinac Policy Conference.

“We’ve seen nothing but chaos and cruelty from a Trump administration determined to gut resources Michiganders depend on, including Medicaid. And Matt Hall is giving our kids the same treatment, more interested in playing politics than serving our communities and our children. We deserve lawmakers who will represent us, not themselves and their rich friends. Who exactly is Matt Hall working for?”
