Michiganders Not Keen on Mackinac Policy Conference

The more people learn about MPC, the less they like the idea of lawmakers attending

MICHIGAN – As lawmakers and lobbyists bask in the glow of their time up at the corporate-backed Mackinac Policy Conference, Progress Michigan released fresh Lake Effect polling showing that a strong majority of Michiganders do not support lawmakers attending the swanky island event.

“Every year, the political establishment makes a big to-do about the Mackinac Policy Conference. It’s clear folks aren’t buying the idea that lobbyists, lawmakers and insiders coming together at an exclusive island resort results in any sort of good policy for everyday Michiganders,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “It’s a petri dish of some of the worst aspects of our political system: corporate money flooding our politics, exclusive access for only those with money and a lot of self-congratulatory bullcrap from political and lobbying insiders. What do Michiganders actually get out of this performance?
“The more people learn about the Mackinac Policy Conference and the corporate lobbyists who are the engine of it, the less they support it,” Inglot continued. “This is a trend we are seeing across the state, people are fed up with the corporate dominance of our politics. They want to see the money and the corrupting influence it brings out of our political system.”

Progress Michigan’s monthly Lake Effect poll tracks public opinion about a variety of issues in Michigan. In concert with Progress Michigan, Public Policy Polling interviewed 622 Michigan voters from May 30-31, 2025 by phone and text. Margin of error for this poll is +/-3.9%. Full results for this poll are available upon request.
