Republicans Celebrate Bring Your Awful Former AG to Work Day
Committee run by Reps. Rigas, Schriver gets even more awful with Bill Schuette guest appearance
MICHIGAN – On Wednesday, Progress Michigan called attention to the decision to have two former attorneys general, including Bill “Shady” Schuette, speak in a meeting of the House “Weaponization of State Government” Committee.
The ranking Republican members of this committee are Rep. Angela Rigas, a longtime election denier best known for voting against a ban on child marriage and threatening violence against public health officials, and Rep. Josh Schriver, a disgraceful neo-Nazi who has repeatedly tweeted white supremacist rhetoric and called for a ban on gay marriage.
“This committee is a joke,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “If the name of the committee hadn’t already made it clear that Michigan Republicans are deeply unserious people with no interest in improving Michiganders’ lives, putting Rigas and Schriver in charge certainly does. A meeting with just those two would be bad enough, but throwing Shady Schuette into the mix promises to amp up the political circus even further.”
Over the years, Progress Michigan has repeatedly criticized Bill Schuette for his untrustworthy behavior and his bogus, pro-corporate agenda. Some highlights of his career include:
- His wasteful and backwards crusade to fight against marriage equality and attempts to block civil rights protections for the LGBTQ community
- His efforts to protect corporate polluters
- His support for anti-worker legislation like Right to Work and repealing the prevailing wage
- His claim that there is “no fundamental right to literacy” for school kids
- His use of his public office to sell tropical island real estate
- His use of his taxpayer-funded office as a political enterprise
- His infamous use of the “fee approach” to block access to public records
- His attempt to play both sides of the Flint Water Crisis
- His cozy relationship with Betsy DeVos and her failed education policies
- His ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with white nationalists like Ted Nugent and Steve Bannon
- His naked political ambition that robbed the people of Michigan a real advocate in the AG’s office
“Michiganders have already had to live through eight years with Bill Schuette in one of our state’s top executive offices. Have they not suffered enough?” Inglot continued. “Unless Schuette’s planned comments involve a thorough and genuine apology and a detailed outline of how he plans to repair the damage he did to this state, we’re not interested in hearing from him.”
