Staffer Arraignment Highlights GOP Leadership Habit of Ignoring Wrongdoing
The Minards’ arraignment shows glaring need for campaign finance transparency and failings of MIGOP leadership
LANSING, Mich. –– Yet another criminal indictment includes big names in the Michigan Republican Party; this time it’s staffers for former House Speaker Lee Chatfield, Anne and Rob Minard. In response Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan issued the following statement:
“Michiganders deserve real transparency from our leaders and the people who work for them. The alleged abuses by the Minards highlight not only a glaring need for an overhaul of Michigan’s campaign finance system to increase transparency and accountability but also the stark lack of accountability from Michigan’s Republican leadership.
“The problems inside the MIGOP aren’t random; they’re systemic. Scandal after scandal have rocked the Michigan Republican Party for years. This type of abuse of power is what happens when leadership ignores, and unfortunately is a part of, this kind of behavior time and time again. We get that the Michigan Republican Party is busy fighting a lot of very messy internal battles right now—let’s be honest, their party is a trash fire—but as they argue about how to rebuild, maybe their leadership should think about learning to hold their people accountable to basic moral and legal standards.”
