New Poll: Michiganders Support Progressive Policy Agenda

Voters largely agree with the approach taken by Gov. Whitmer, Democratic legislature

MICHIGAN – On Tuesday, Progress Michigan released the latest edition of Lake Effect, a monthly research newsletter that tracks public opinion about a variety of issues and political figures. This month’s issue digs into voters’ attitudes about the policy agenda put forth by Michigan’s new Democratic trifecta.

“Time and time again, Michigan voters have made it clear that they support bold, progressive policies to support working families, prevent gun violence, and strengthen communities across the state,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Now, Democratic leaders are finally in position to deliver on these priorities, with extremely popular policies like repealing the retirement tax and ensuring every four-year-old in Michigan has the opportunity to attend preschool. It’s also no surprise that evidence-based gun violence prevention policies like safe storage laws still gain widespread support from Michigan voters. And, looking to the future, Michiganders are fed up with a system where working people foot the bill for our communities’ needs while corporations and the wealthy are let off the hook—they’re ready to tax the rich.”

Full results of the poll are available here. Key takeaways include:

  • 86 percent of respondents support repealing the retirement tax, and 71 percent support expanding the Working Families Tax Credit.
  • 71 percent of those polled support free, public preschool for all four-year-olds in Michigan.
  • 74 percent of respondents support universal background checks for firearm purchases, and 71 percent support safe storage laws.
  • 63 percent of those polled support raising taxes on corporations and the wealthy, compared to just 25 percent in opposition and 12 percent who are unsure.
