Michigan Republicans Are Hypocrites, What Else Is New?

House and Senate Republicans prove they’d rather break their promises than work with Gov. Whitmer

MICHIGAN – On Thursday, House Democrats passed  the Lowering MI Costs bill package, which delivers on many of the promises Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Democratic leaders made during their campaigns last year. Every Republican member but one voted no.

“In a turn of events that will shock absolutely no one, Republicans’ alleged commitment to repealing the retirement tax and providing support for working families disappeared immediately when it was time to put their words into action,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Not only are the components included in this bill package broadly popular and just plain good policy; they’re ideas Michigan Republicans claimed to support all last year while they ran for re-election. It’s a good thing the Democrats finally have a majority—because without their leadership, working families would miss out on support they desperately need right now.

“And meanwhile in the Senate, the Republican caucus just used an underhanded trick to head home early, without voting on these critical bills. Michiganders are tired of seeing our real problems used as political bargaining chips by lawmakers who care more about undermining Gov. Whitmer than doing what’s right—and we’re glad the progressive majority we voted for is delivering on their promises.”
