Whitmer Vetoes Bills That Promoted ‘Big Lie’

Four election bills were simply aimed at voter suppression

MICHIGAN – After Governor Gretchen Whitmer vetoed four anti-voter bills that originated from conspiracies about the November 2020 election, Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan, issued the following statement:

“Gov. Whitmer deserves praise for rightfully vetoing these bills that would have undermined the freedom to vote. After months of Republicans spreading conspiracies about the 2020 election, the most free and fair election in history, they found absolutely nothing and wrote these bills just to waste our time. It’s appropriate that Gov. Whitmer was at the NAACP Dinner when she struck down bills aimed at keeping Black and brown voters away from the polls.

“We agree with Gov. Whitmer: these bills create barriers at the ballot box and promote the violent ‘Big Lie.’ Right now, Republicans are doing all they can with their ‘Secure MI Vote’ petition, which is really a power grab designed to take away voting options and hamstring election officials’ ability to administer elections and inform voters of their rights. It’s time to enact legislation that will make voting more accessible, including giving people more options for early voting and making sure that all ballots received within 14 days of Election Day are tabulated.”
