Gov. Whitmer Correct in Issuing Warning Letter to Shut Down Line 5
Gov. has legal authority to order shutdown, while Enbridge chooses to operate its pipeline unlawfully
MICHIGAN – Progress Michigan is applauding Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s action to shut down Line 5 today in the interest of protecting public health and the environment. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer sent a letter to Enbridge calling on the Canadian oil company to stop operating the Line 5 pipeline in the Great Lakes or face consequences.
“Protecting the health and safety of Michiganders and the Great Lakes are more important than a corporation’s bottom line. We support Governor Whitmer’s efforts to hold Enbridge accountable and safeguard the Great Lakes,” said Sam Inglot, deputy director of Progress Michigan. “We stand with the tribal nations who have been demanding recognition of their sovereignty, including the announcement from the Bay Mills Indian Community to formally banish Enbridge from their land. This foreign fossil fuel giant must respect the law and take action to shut down this outdated and compromised pipeline.”
