Michiganders Wait on COVID Solutions While Republicans Focus on Nonexistent Election Fraud
Republican inaction is literally killing people
MICHIGAN – With COVID-19 caseloads still on the rise and people across the state experiencing food and housing insecurity, Michigan’s Republican-controlled state legislature has yet to take substantive action to protect public health.
More than 200 bills are currently pending for committee or floor vote this week, but only a handful relate to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this year, Republican legislators acted to strip Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of the emergency powers that allowed her to mitigate this pandemic, asserting that the governor should be working with them—but they still refuse to do their jobs.
Today, the Michigan Senate took hours of testimony repeating many debunked, baseless claims of voter fraud in Detroit and tomorrow the Michigan House will welcome conspiracist in-chief Rudolph “Rudy” Giuliani.
“Look, I know it’s almost Christmas and Republicans are more interested in playing Rudy’s reindeer games, but Michiganians are suffering right now,” said Lonnie Scott, Executive Director of Progress Michigan. “We need statewide action to slow the spread of COVID-19. We need policies that will support essential workers and provide needed assistance to those who are struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic. Republicans said they wanted to be included in the state’s coronavirus response, but they refuse to come to the table and work on real solutions. Their inaction is literally killing people, and it’s time for them to step up and take responsibility. The election is over but COVID is raging. It’s time they start addressing the real issues faces our state.”
