Progressives Express Support for Whitmer Climate Action
Gov. Whitmer’s latest executive action shows she takes this crisis seriously
MICHIGAN – On Wednesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order aimed at combating the climate crisis and making Michigan a carbon-neutral state by 2050. The order lays out a broad framework for lowering greenhouse gas emissions and creates a new Council on Climate Solutions that will work with EGLE to explore methods of reaching those goals.
“This order makes it clear once again that Gov. Whitmer believes in listening to the experts and using her position to protect our public health,” said Lonnie Scott, Executive Director of Progress Michigan. “As many of our elected officials, including Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, continue to deny the reality of climate change, the situation has become more and more urgent. We can’t afford to wait any longer—people, especially Black and brown people and those in low-income communities, are already suffering the consequences of corporate polluters’ reckless actions, and without big, bold solutions, things are only going to get worse. We’ve got a long way to go in the fight to rein in corporate polluters and save our future on this planet, but Gov. Whitmer’s plan is a step in the right direction.”
