Progress Michigan Praises Supreme Court Abortion Access Ruling

U.S. Supreme Court Affirms Access to Abortion is Constitutional

WASHINGTON – This morning the Supreme Court of the United States in a 5-4 decision ruled that access to abortion cannot be limited by states playing political games. The Louisiana law is one of many attempts by anti-choice organizations to make Targeted Restrictions on Abortion Provider (TRAP) laws common and make abortion a nearly impossible procedure to obtain.

“Today SCOTUS reaffirmed what the people of the United States knew all along: Abortion is healthcare and access to safe abortion is guaranteed by the United States Constitution,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director at Progress Michigan. “In Michigan, we have seen attack after attack on the constitutional right to an abortion, including one playing out right now with a ballot measure that failed to collect the requisite number of signatures. Hospital admitting privileges are another, of many, tactics anti-choice organizers use to restrict access to a safe, legal abortions. Implementing laws like these has very little to do with safety and everything to do with oppressing people who seek this safe and necessary form of healthcare. We’re glad that the Supreme Court has affirmed again today that the decision to seek an abortion is not a decision that should be made in a courtroom or State Capitol, but one that should be made between a patient and their doctor.”
