Progress Michigan Slams GOP’s Continued Threats to State’s Healthcare

Republican lawmakers are endangering Michigan’s public health

MICHIGAN – On Thursday, Progress Michigan condemned a GOP-backed resolution that would use public money to fight against healthcare.  Republicans want to appropriate funds for a court battle to restrict Medicaid access using work requirements in Michigan. This resolution comes in the midst of a public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and is yet another effort to cut low-income Michiganders off from the health coverage they depend on.

“Medicaid work requirements have always been a cruel policy designed to shame and further stigmatize the poor,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “The harm of imposing Medicaid restrictions becomes even more apparent as we face the pandemic of COVID–19. It is absolutely unconscionable that, during a public health crisis that puts our entire state at risk, Republicans are still trying to rip health care away from our most vulnerable communities. We’ve known for a long time that the GOP cares more about catering to big corporations than ensuring people are able to get the care they need, but this bill makes it more obvious than ever—and any lawmaker supporting it should be ashamed.”
