Progress Michigan Statement on Whitmer’s Budget Action
MICHIGAN — Progress Michigan released the following statement regarding Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s use of the line-item veto in the K-12 education budget.
“Since she took office, Gov. Whitmer has fought for the right budget priorities and to ensure our schools have the levels of funding that they need,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “We’ve seen that legislative Republicans don’t care about our schools, our roads or our water and at the end of the day it’s clear, our state needs more revenue. We face these sorts of budgetary problems because Republicans are short on ideas and long on excuses and because corporations and the wealthy are not paying their fair share. We applaud Gov. Whitmer for continuing to fight for her budget priorities by using her executive authority to make line-item veto changes in the budget. We vow to follow her lead and work to build a revenue system in Michigan that ensures big business and the wealthy pay their fair share and our priorities are properly funded.”
