Progress Michigan Statement on Passage of Education Budget
MICHIGAN — Progress Michigan released the following statement regarding the passage of the K-12 education budget in the Michigan Legislature:
“The only ‘record’ here in Lansing as it pertains education funding seems to be stuck on the tune of ‘underinvestment’. For a quarter century, Michigan has lagged behind the rest of the nation in K-12 funding and this budget is a continuation of that failure. Our classrooms are overcrowded, teachers and parents are doling out cash from their own pockets for basic school supplies, and neighborhood schools struggle with basic upkeep. This budget continues to put a small bandage on a big problem,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “It’s also become crystal clear through this budget fight that we do not have enough revenue in this state because not everyone is paying their fair share. For too long, corporations and their lobbyists have rigged the rules, so our communities are left to fight for scraps. We need to close those loopholes and ensure there’s enough revenue coming into the state to fund our priorities like our roads, our water and our schools.”
