Progress Michigan: Kalamazoo Metro Workers Deserve Better
Union members say workers forced to wear adult diapers because of no bathroom breaks
KALAMAZOO – On Monday, Kalamazoo Metro workers picketed outside the Metro Headquarters demanding better wages and adequate bathroom and lunch breaks. The Amalgamated Transit Union, says management at the Metro has denied employee wage increases and longer bathroom breaks for a year.
“The fact that some workers are forced to wear adult diapers to work is disgusting and inhumane. Adequate bathroom breaks are a basic necessity for everyone and no one should be put into that position,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director at Progress Michigan. “These workers deserve to be paid a fair wage and, at a minimum, have time to eat their lunch and use the restroom. These are basic, humane standards that should be agreed on swiftly. The leadership at Kalamazoo Metro should be ashamed of themselves for treating public workers like this. Progress Michigan stands with the employees at Metro and the ATU who are fighting hard for basic dignity.”
According to media reports, Metro workers and the Amalgamated Transit Union will be holding informational pickets until an agreement with Metro is reached.
