Progress Michigan Calls Out Senate GOP for Voting Against Clean Water

Republicans put corporate interests over our health

LANSING – Progress Michigan released the following statement on the Senate Republicans’ vote to overrule Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s efforts to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Michigan:

“In a state home to an ongoing, manmade water crisis in the City of Flint and PFAS contamination across numerous cities, Republicans in the legislature just can’t seem to get over the idea that their corporate donors would have been kicked out of the room. This is an absolutely shameful move, even for them,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Gov. Gretchen Whitmer did right by Michigan’s residents to recognize the utter failures of eight years under total GOP control and offered this EO to fix their past mistakes. The citizens of the Great Lakes State deserve nothing less. Michigan will not move forward or attract the best and brightest talent if the water is polluted, the air is unbreathable, and corporations rule the roost. We hope majority Republicans come forward with a better solution, and soon, if they truly do care about the future of this state. Governor Whitmer has talked about bi-partisanship and building bridges, this makes it clear that Republicans are only interested in building barriers.”
