Progress Michigan Staffer Heads to Oxford
Matt Kovac to research war and social movements in the UK
LANSING — Progress Michigan Digital Media Coordinator Matt Kovac will leave the watchdog organization Friday to head to the University of Oxford’s Keble College this fall.
“From day one, Matt has been an invaluable part of our team, leading our social media strategy, writing hard-hitting commentaries and fighting for a more globally minded progressive movement,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “We’re sad to see him go, but know he will bring fresh and exciting new insights to the social justice movement upon his return to the United States.”
Kovac will pursue a master’s degree in modern British and European history at Oxford, researching the role played by Irish WWI veterans in the struggle against British rule. He has recently given academic talks at Princeton University, the University of Edinburgh, and Meredith College.
“When I first came to Progress Michigan, it was with the knowledge that this state was on the front lines of national battles over austerity, labor, and water rights,” said Kovac. “Every day for the past three years, I’ve been amazed by how my friends have met that challenge with skill, humor, and steadfast dedication to the well-being of their fellow Michiganders. It’s been an honor to work alongside them, and I look forward to following their continued good work.”
Kovac, a Chicago native, has served as digital media coordinator at Progress Michigan since fall 2014.
