Schuette, Calley Must Speak Out Against U.S. Senate Healthcare Scheme
Senate Healthcare Bill Would Take Away Healthcare from Millions, Devastate Fight Against Opioid Abuse
LANSING — Progress Michigan released the following statement regarding the newly released details of the U.S. Senate Republican healthcare scheme, calling on Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley and Attorney General Bill Schuette to speak out against the bill and defend the healthcare of all Michiganders.
“From what we know about this bill, it’s clear that it’s an utter disaster for working families and yet another boon for the wealthy,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “One very troubling aspect of the Senate bill is that it greatly limits the amount of funds that go to addressing the opioid crisis. Both Brian Calley and Bill Schuette have spoken up for the need to address the opioid crisis head-on — and now it’s time for them to stand up to their own party in Washington and push back on this backwards healthcare scheme that restricts critical funding when our communities need it the most. The truth is this is not a healthcare bill at all. The simple fact is that Senate Republicans have crafted a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans and are willing to pay for it by taking healthcare away from children, the sick and the elderly and driving costs up for the rest of us. We firmly oppose these attacks on the health of Michiganders and strongly encourage Schuette and Calley to join us in public opposition to this disastrous bill.”
