Progress Michigan Urges U.S. Senate to Reject the Appointment of Betsy DeVos
DeVos-funded education policies have been bad for Michigan students
LANSING — Today the United States Senate will hold a confirmation hearing for Betsy DeVos’ appointment as Secretary of Education. DeVos was appointed by President-elect Donald Trump despite her lack of any experience in education. The following statement can be attributed to Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan.
“Betsy DeVos is not qualified to lead the public education system. Her history as a donor to Republicans seems to be the only reason she was picked for this position. DeVos has pushed for disasterous policies that have led to deplorable conditions in some of Michigan’s public schools. Betsy DeVos also has a history of funding anti-LGBTQ initiatives and her confirmation could have long lasting impacts on students negating years of anti-bullying initiatives. Some people would call DeVos a change maker but changing our ideal of quality public schools to a profit-driven exercise is not the change we need. The United States Senate should reject her appointment and send a clear message that our public school system is not for sale to the highest bidder.”
