Anti-LGBTQ Bill Seeks to Move Michigan Away from Equality
LANSING – As the rest of the nation moves forward to fully recognize the rights of the LGBTQ community, at least one elected leader in Michigan wants to turn back the clock. State Senator Tom Casperson will introduce legislation targeting transgender students in Michigan for harassment and discrimination. Progress Michigan spoke out in favor of protecting the rights of all students.
“At a time when Michigan is in the headlines daily for poisoning an entire city, you’d expect our legislators to have better things to do than paint targets on the backs of LGBTQ students. I thought we were well past the time when we tolerated bullying and harassment in our schools,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Similar bills have already been rejected in South Dakota and Tennessee. In North Carolina, that state’s wrongheaded decision to pass similar discriminatory legislation has resulted in a federal lawsuit. Senator Casperson must not be paying attention, because he’s signing us up for the same national embarrassment with his bill. Michigan Republicans have already made Michigan a shining example of ineffective governance, hopefully they will stop this bill that seeks to continue their history of adding ignorance and bigotry to that list.”
