Watchdog group urges Snyder to select 3rd highest vote-getter from 2012 election

LANSING – Today the citizens watchdog group Progress Michigan called on Governor Snyder to trust voters in his appointment to the Michigan Supreme Court. Last November, there was a 7-way non-partisan race for an 8-year Supreme Court term. The top two vote getters won this race, so Governor Snyder can quickly decide his appointment by picking the third place candidate.

“The Governor now has a choice. He can trust Michigan voters or continue to let extreme billionaires like Dick DeVos and the Koch Brothers dictate appointments and public policy in Michigan,” said Zack Pohl, Executive Director of Progress Michigan. “Up to this point the Governor has offered little more than lip service to bipartisanship and the concerns of voters. We are urging Gov. Snyder to back up his words with action.”

The final elections results from 2012 were:

Bridget Mary McCormack – 1,528,200 votes*

Stephen Markman – 1,496,918 votes*

Connie Marie Kelley – 1,400,308 votes

Colleen O’Brien – 1,387,590 votes

Kerry Morgan – 264,121 votes

Doug Dern – 219,128 votes

Bob Roddis – 181,238 votes

“If the Governor once again jams through a right-wing appointment clearly against the will of the people, it will speak volumes about the type of partisan steamrolling that has become the norm for this administration,” said Pohl. “Ultimately, the choice will also indicate who Governor Snyder really listens to – ideological billionaires or ordinary Michigan citizens.”
