NEW POLL: Michiganders Oppose Con-Con

MICHIGAN — Recent polling conducted by Progress Michigan in partnership with Public Policy Polling shows that a majority of Michiganders oppose a Constitutional Convention (Con-Con), especially when they are made aware of what is at risk. A Con-Con would allow delegates to make sweeping changes to the state constitution, without accountability or oversight from voters.

“Michiganders are against a Con-Con because we’ve already had success making constitutional changes through citizen-led ballot measures,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “From legalizing marijuana in 2018 to protecting reproductive freedoms and expanding voting rights in 2022, these successful constitutional amendments had extensive public debate and put the power where it belongs — with the people. Michiganders want it to stay that way. Opening the entire constitution to revision would allow for special interests to strip away the rights that Michiganders already fought hard to enjoy. We cannot take that risk.”

Under Michigan law, every 16 years voters are asked whether the state should hold a Constitutional Convention to consider rewriting the Michigan Constitution. Would you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose holding a Constitutional Convention in Michigan?

Bar chart of Michigan poll results on holding a state Constitutional Convention. Overall, 51% oppose (38% strongly), 31% support and 18% are not sure. Opposition leads among women (50% to 32%), men (51% to 32%), Democrats (47% to 37%), Republicans (55% to 28%), Independents (51% to 28%) and white voters (54% to 27%). African American voters support it 68% to 17%. Margin of error ±3.9%, sample of 630.

If a state Constitutional Convention were held, voter approved ballot measures like expanding voting rights and legalizing abortion could be reversed. Having heard this, let me ask you again: would you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose holding a Constitutional Convention in Michigan?
