New Poll: Nearly Half of Michiganders Struggle With Cost of Health Insurance
Many cannot afford basic necessities due to high cost of health insurance
MICHIGAN — In a recent poll conducted by Progress Michigan in partnership with Public Policy Polling, 49 percent of Michiganders report that the high cost of health insurance impacts their ability to afford basic necessities like gas and groceries at least some of the time. The poll results also show that African Americans are disproportionately affected by the cost of health insurance.
“Half of Michigan is already struggling with the cost of health insurance, and it’s set to get worse in 2027 when major changes to Medicaid go into effect,” said Justin Mendoza, MPH, executive director of Progress Michigan. “With everyday costs getting higher and higher, it is clear that we need a system like Medicare for All to help Michiganders improve their health and afford their lives.”
