Speaker Hall’s New Select Committee is a Waste of Time and Taxpayer Dollars

MICHIGAN – In response to the news that the Michigan House of Representatives passed House Resolution 350 creating a select committee to investigate the Board of State Canvassers and Board of Elections because the Americans for Citizens Voting initiative failed to have the required signatures to make the November ballot, Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan, issued the following statement:

“Speaker Matt Hall could have brought any bill forward this week to lower costs for Michigan families as healthcare costs and gas prices eat away at our wallets, but instead he’s establishing a bogus committee for a failed, multi-million dollar ballot initiative that didn’t get enough valid signatures. Wasting taxpayer resources on a scavenger hunt that’s meant to serve as free public relations for a campaign that got knocked off because of sloppy signature gathering is unfortunately predictable for Hall and his caucus. They better be prepared to bring a box of crayons to the committee hearings to write with because all the work they’ll do will be as valid as those shoddy petition pages.

“Let’s be clear: This anti-voter proposal would make it harder for U.S. citizens to cast their ballots. When we consider the reports of petition circulators misrepresenting the initiative to get signatures, the committee’s campaign finance issues, and not being truthful about the nature of this initiative, it’s not at all surprising that Americans for Citizen Voting-Michigan failed to follow guidelines for gathering valid signatures. House Republicans couldn’t wait for the Michigan Supreme Court to make the final ruling in early September about whether or not it will officially make the ballot, and they’re using this last-ditch effort to sow doubt in our successful, nonpartisan election system.”
