New Poll: Michiganders Support Gun Safety Laws
Polling shows broad support for gun safety measures passed in 2023
MICHIGAN – A new poll released by End Gun Violence Michigan in collaboration with Progress Michigan and Public Policy Polling revealed ongoing majority support for Michigan’s new gun safety laws, with 70 percent of Michigan voters agreeing that the laws should remain on the books. The poll surveyed 641 Michigan voters from June 26-27, 2026.
“Too many Michigan families have been living in fear of gun violence for too long. I’m proud that we were able to deliver real results for them that are saving lives. When you do the right thing, it turns out to be quite popular,” said state Representative Kelly Breen (D-Novi), who led the work to pass many of the gun laws from her position as chair of the House Judiciary Committee and lead sponsor of the Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation.
1,200 Michiganders lose their lives to guns each year, and guns remain the number one cause of death for children. The new laws include universal background checks to ensure that every gun purchase is legal; a requirement that all firearms in homes with children be safely stored with a lock or safe; and the Extreme Risk Protection Order law, which allows a judge to temporarily remove firearms from an individual in a crisis, such as imminent risk for suicide.
“Saving lives from senseless gun violence is the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do, and it’s the popular thing to do,” said Ryan Bates of End Gun Violence Michigan. “After living with years of mass shootings and rising rates of suicide, the public supports common sense gun safety measures. Policymakers in Lansing should pay less attention to the gun lobby’s noise and more attention to their voters.”
“When Extreme Risk Protection Orders were being voted on in Lansing, we heard nothing but relentless opposition from right-wing lawmakers,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “These poll results reveal that our leaders who continue to decry these life-saving laws are out-of-touch with reality. The truth is that Michiganders support common sense gun laws that keep weapons out of the hands of individuals who are too dangerous to wield them.”
The new gun safety laws include universal background checks, an extreme risk protection order law to keep guns out of the hands of individuals at risk of harming themselves or others, and a safe storage law.
