Trump’s Latest Effort to Take Away Michiganders’ Voting Rights is No Joke
Executive order on absentee voting is a power-grab that violates Michigan’s constitution and the will of voters
MICHIGAN – In response to the news that Donald Trump released an executive order on March 31, 2026 that could limit Michiganders options for voting, Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan, issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump and his MAGA enablers in Congress know that their agenda of driving up costs and terrorizing families on our streets is deeply unpopular. They’re afraid of being held accountable at the ballot box, so Trump is trying to limit voting rights to take away our power and ensure he and his allies can’t lose. In 2024, more than two million Michiganders voted by mail. And so did Donald Trump.
“Along with the SAVE Act, these efforts to limit people’s voting freedoms will create more headaches, red tape and uncertainty. This executive order goes against our constitutional rights and against the will of Michiganders, who chose to allow for permanent absentee voting for all eligible voters. I will be turning in my absentee ballot personally to vote in my May 5 election at home, and encourage voters to continue to use their legally protected rights.”
