New Poll: Michiganders Expect State Leaders to Rein In Immigration Enforcement Abuses, Even if Federal Government Fails to Act
LANSING, Mich. — New polling released by Progress Michigan shows strong support among Michiganders for state and federal reforms that would place limits and accountability measures on immigration enforcement, signaling that voters expect state lawmakers to act to protect families and communities even if federal officials refuse to change course.
“Michiganders are sending a clear message that they want safeguards, transparency, and limits on immigration enforcement,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Even if Washington refuses to act, voters expect state leaders to step up and ensure enforcement practices respect basic rights and community safety.”
Progress Michigan’s polling notes that while voters vary on which individual reform should come first, overall support for the package demonstrates broad public interest in establishing limits and protections.
“This isn’t just about policy, it’s about accountability,” Mendoza continued. “When nearly half of voters say opposing these protections would make them less likely to support a candidate, lawmakers should understand that inaction carries real political risk. Michiganders expect their state leaders to protect schools, hospitals, places of worship, and the privacy of residents. If the federal government will not rein in harmful practices, voters clearly believe Michigan lawmakers should.”
