Enough of the Budget Games: MAGA Republicans Have Forced Uncertainty & Turmoil for Michigan Families
Republican lawmakers would rather shut everything down than do their jobs and fund our communities
MICHIGAN – On Wednesday, Progress Michigan responded to the signing of Michigan’s continuation budget while MAGA Republicans in U.S. Congress once again failed to do their jobs, forcing a federal government shutdown. The following statement can be attributed to Denzel McCampbell, managing director of Progress Michigan:
“MAGA Republicans in Washington, D.C. have made one thing clear: they don’t care about working families, and they will grind government to a halt rather than govern responsibly. While the divided government in Lansing has passed a continuing budget that will allow for another full week of negotiations, MAGA Republicans in Washington are once again pushing the country into crisis because of their own dysfunction and extremism.”
“Let’s be clear, while a continuing budget was signed into law early this morning in Lansing, we should not be here in the first place. This budget fight has centered on Republican lawmakers’ reluctance to fully fund our public schools and preserve the popular, successful free breakfast and lunch programs that have helped keep kids from going hungry. Instead of doing their job, House Republicans waited until the last minute to shove through a reckless, irresponsible budget that would devastate communities across the state. This period of uncertainty is entirely the fault of Speaker Matt Hall and his fellow MAGA Republican caucus.
“MAGA Republicans, especially in Washington, D.C., would rather hold our government hostage than compromise, pushing extreme cuts to health care and essential services instead of negotiating in good faith. Their refusal to govern puts families at risk and proves they care more about ideology than people.”
“This isn’t leadership, it’s chaos. And it’s not the first time. Republicans have failed to learn from the many times that they have driven us to this cliff and just as many times shut down the government while they have governed. Sadly, the American people are once again paying the price for their inability to do their jobs.
“None of this is a game, despite Republican lawmakers treating it like one. These policies have real consequences for real people, people whose lives and health are being put needlessly at risk. What MAGA Republicans have done to this country is unforgivable and we will never stop fighting for the thoughtful, compassionate leadership and funding our communities deserve.”
