Michigan Republicans Pretend to Care About Environment for Once
GOP outcry over Gaylord solar project is cynical, disingenuous nonsense
MICHIGAN – In response to a proposed solar energy project planned near Gaylord, MI, several Republican lawmakers are making bad faith arguments about its impact on the Northern Michigan landscape—even though the land in question has already been subject to logging and surrounded by development, and is well suited for solar in its current state.
“Republican lawmakers’ temper tantrums about solar energy in Gaylord are patently ridiculous and do not deserve to be taken seriously for even a second,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “For one, the land marked for this project is surrounded by development and has already been logged repeatedly before, and experts say its current condition is already well suited for solar, without need for further alteration. But what makes their outcry even more ludicrous is that these same lawmakers are perfectly content to destroy landscapes via logging, oil drilling, and mining. Republicans are the party of corporate polluters. The only thing they’re interested in protecting are the profits of big oil and dirty fossil fuel companies. Investing in and creating clean, renewable energy to combat the climate crisis is how we truly protect our environment, public health and natural resources.”
