Fifth Term’s the Charm: Progress Michigan Statement on Senate Passage of FOIA Reform
Democratic Senate Majority Delivers on Reforming State’s FOIA Laws

LANSING, Mich. –– On Thursday, the Michigan State Senate voted nearly unanimously to reform Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) laws to include the executive offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, along with the Michigan Legislature. Progress Michigan released the following statement, attributed to Sam Inglot, executive director:

“While we’ve had our share of cloudy days in Michigan lately, Michiganders should feel good that brighter days are closer with the Senate passage of Senate Bills 669 and 670. After Republican Senate leadership failed to reform the FOIA laws in our state government for a decade, the Democratic-led Senate has voted to shine more light and reverse the trend of Michigan ranking at the bottom in the nation when it comes to transparency.

“We urge the Michigan House to quickly take up this legislation and ensure that these policies are the strongest and most robust legislation to make our state government more transparent and accountable to all Michiganders. Not only is this the right thing to do, but it’s also extremely popular with Michiganders, who continue to call on our legislators to do better when it comes to ethics and transparency.”
