Michiganders Celebrate Farm Bill’s Defeat in Senate Ag Committee
MICHIGAN — In response to the news that the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to advance the GOP-led farm bill, Michiganders are expressing their opposition to the bill and support for Senator Elissa Slotkin after voting no. Organizations are advocating to members of Congress that no farm bill is better than passing the current version legislators are considering into law.
“Michigan’s independent family farmers are proud that Senator Slotkin stood with us in voting against the farm bill in its current form,” said Bob Thompson, president of Michigan Farmers Union. “While we are glad to see important amendments included after markup to restore Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling (MCOOL) for beef, as it stands now, the farm bill contains too many giveaways to Big Ag while failing to meet the needs for farmers and the families who rely on us for food.”
“With groceries costing Michigan families an arm and a leg, our leaders should be doing everything they can to relieve us from the economic pains we’re facing,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “The Republican-introduced farm bill in the Senate takes us backwards. Since Trump’s Big BS Bill passed in Congress last year, 10 percent of Michiganders SNAP recipients have had their benefits taken away from them. Congress needs to restore these cuts in the farm bill to prevent further economic pressure that too many are facing.”
