New Poll: Michiganders Broadly Support Ban on AI Health Insurance Denials

The practice of denying or approving health insurance claims using AI tools is deeply unpopular across the political spectrum

MICHIGAN – In recent polling conducted by Progress Michigan in partnership with Public Policy Polling, Michiganders report that they would support a ban on the use of AI for denying or approving health insurance claims. Health insurance companies regularly review the claims sent by doctor’s offices, clinics, and surgery centers to see if care is covered or not under their plans. Increasingly, health insurance companies have been utilizing AI to assess claims.

“Health insurance claim reviews should never be decided by an algorithm. Michiganders want and deserve a transparent review process where a human being has the final say to approve or deny claims,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “The last thing we want to see are AI death panels that decide who gets care and who doesn’t.”

“Doctors already spend enough time on the phone with insurance companies trying to get them to cover the care they know their patients need,” said Dr. Rob Davidson, Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Health Care. “AI programs will only allow insurance companies to deny care for patients faster and on a larger scale. Michiganders want insurance companies to cover their care, not find new ways to deny it.”

Health insurance companies regularly review claims made by patients to determine whether or not to cover care. Increasingly, those companies are using AI tools to deny or accept those claims. Lawmakers in Michigan have proposed banning the use of AI for health insurance claim denials, ensuring a person is involved in reviewing a patient’s information. Would you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose banning the use of AI for health insurance claim denials?

In concert with Progress Michigan, Public Policy Polling interviewed 641 Michigan voters from June 26-27, 2026 by phone and text. Margin of error for this poll is +/-3.9 percent.
