New Poll: Michiganders Oppose Republicans Cuts to Nutrition Assistance and Farmer Support

While most are unfamiliar with the farm bill, there is strong opposition to its provisions and support for Senate to pass a better version

MICHIGAN – Recent polling conducted by Progress Michigan in partnership with Public Policy Polling shows that a majority of Michiganders are unfamiliar with the federal farm bill and oppose the version of the legislation that House Republicans passed on April 30. H.R. 7567, the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026, contains sweeping cuts to nutrition assistance and conservation funding for farmers at a time of extreme economic uncertainty. The Senate Agriculture Committee has yet to unveil their version of the farm bill, and Michiganders want Senators to oppose the House’s harmful cuts.

“Michigan needs a new farm bill, but if the legislation is just a MAGA wish list to remove protections for our air, water, and soil and give wealthy corporations the upper hand at the expense of independent farmers, then no farm bill is better than the one that House Republicans recently passed,” said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. “The White House and Republicans in Congress are making our groceries more unaffordable while they continue to fund forever wars in the Middle East, and Michiganders are tired of this vicious cycle. The Senate has a responsibility to stand up for the majority of us who want SNAP cuts restored and conservation assistance for farmers restored. Anything less is just selling out to the mega corporations that control our food system.”

In concert with Progress Michigan, Public Policy Polling interviewed 687 Michigan voters from May 21-22, 2026 by phone and text. Margin of error for this poll is +/-3.7 percent.
