Progress Michigan Announces Justin Mendoza as New Executive Director

Seasoned organizer and public servant to lead the organization into a new chapter fighting for a more progressive and just Michigan

LANSING, MI — Progress Michigan today announced that Justin Mendoza (he/him) has been named the organization’s new Executive Director, ushering in a new chapter of leadership focused on building people-powered progress across the state.

Mendoza brings more than a decade of experience as an organizer, digital communications strategist, nonprofit leader, and policy analyst. He previously served as Executive Director of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, a student-driven health care advocacy organization, following a career in advocacy and government relations with nonprofits based in Washington, D.C., and Boston.

“I’m incredibly excited and honored to join the Progress Michigan team at such a critical moment,” said Mendoza. “The fight for justice and equality is urgent — not just here in Michigan, but across the country. Progress Michigan has a powerful legacy of standing up for working people and holding leaders accountable, and I’m eager to build on that work alongside this talented team and our partners statewide.”

“Justin is a proven leader with a deep commitment to equity, democracy, and Michigan communities,” said Patrick Schuh, Chair of Progress Michigan’s Board of Directors. “His experience building powerful coalitions, winning real policy change, and leading with integrity makes him exactly the right person to build on Progress Michigan’s strong legacy and lead the organization into its next chapter.”

Earlier in his career, Mendoza led organizing and government affairs efforts with Partners In Health United States, helping secure $7.6 billion in federal funding for communities most impacted by COVID-19, with a focus on health and racial equity and global vaccine access. Mendoza is deeply rooted in Michigan politics and public service. He ran for office in Michigan in 2022 and currently serves as 6th Vice Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, Chair of the Kalamazoo County Democratic Party, and Vice Mayor of the City of Parchment.

Mendoza and his partner, Izzy (she/they), live in Parchment, Michigan, with their dog, Abita.
