NEW POLL: Most Michiganders Still in the Dark Over Looming Government Shutdown
Most have heard only a little or nothing at all
MICHIGAN – On Monday, Progress Michigan released new polling results showing that many Michiganders remain in the dark about Michigan’s impending government shutdown. The following statement can be attributed to Denzel McCampbell, Progress Michigan’s managing director:
“We are a little more than a week away from the Michigan state government shutting down and most Michiganders know little or nothing about it. The severe consequences of a state government shutdown underscore the urgent need for all elected officials to break through the silence and chaos coming from Speaker Matt Hall’s leadership and clearly communicate what is at stake. The numbers we saw today are only slightly better than our August polling, and it’s clear that too many Michiganders still know very little about the real and immediate consequences of a government shutdown.
“From protecting school funding to ensuring a backstop against future federal cuts, Michiganders deserve a budget focused on protecting our communities. Instead, Speaker Hall and MAGA Republicans in the Michigan House are following the same failed approach as federal Republicans, who, even with control of three branches of government, have failed to pass a federal budget, compounding the risks of a state government shutdown.
“Everyone should be sounding the alarm. Until everyone in Michigan knows the impacts of what Matt Hall and Michigan Republicans are doing to funding for resources all Michiganders need, including public education.”

In concert with Progress Michigan, Public Policy Polling interviewed 670 Michigan voters from September 18-19, 2025 by phone and text. Margin of error for this poll is +/-3.8%. Full results for this poll are available upon request.
